  I`m also coming back from an injury, but also switching to strictly hand paddles( shoulder concerns). I haven`t been able to paddle as often as I like, probably only one weekend out of three(before I was paddling basically every weekend), and found my progress isn`t what I`d like it to be. More like two steps forward and one step back.

  Your speed of progress will also depend on what kind of shape you can get into.
Again, for myself, I haven`t worked out like I should, so that`s also slowed down my progress.

  You have a roll and that means you can be more agressive, so I`d say go for it. You`re also young(college age), so I`d say you`d be pretty resillant in comming back.  

   If you have access to a pool, I`d hit that as often as you can, preferably with a playboat.

  If you`ve ever seen someone do the `long jump` in track, they`ll take a couple of  slower measured strides, then take off for the big leap. Something like that.
