....they make a cheap spare paddle, and are fun for surfing. I can make three out of one home depot bucket and some strapping.

  You can surf even tiny waves by being able to constantly adjust with paddles in the water on both sides. Plus you feel more at one with the water with hand paddles.

  I would advise learning with hand paddles and a stick at the same time.

  As far as a stick goes you might want to buy used until you figure out what degree feather or whatever is best for you.

  I bought second hand paddles from people I boated with and it worked great, until I decided to buy a nice expensive new paddle, which I lost almost immediately ( put your phone number on your paddle and if you loose it, it will come back to you!).
