I had a great time at my first Green Race two years ago! Did 5 runs down the river with Clay showing me the lines and then raced.
I didn't go left at go left but went right. I figured my best bet was to paddle well in the drops and count on my racing experience to keep me in the lead, but since I had only run go left two times in my life, why risk a 3-6 second loss instead of just taking the 3 second slower line and being a faster river runner over all for the win? Just my theory. It worked and Team JK took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the race. Sadly we weren't around last year.
I hope I am able to race this year. I love the river, and the race is super cool.
As for being ready. I never consider myself "ready". If I lived at the Green I would always be ready. But since I can't even name the major rapids in order, it is the same old thing for me. Get to a river, figure out the major rapids, try to memorize them, and then try not to lose the race on the minor rapids or screw up a major one.
For me racing a run like the Green, where I ran it for the first time in 1990, the second time in 1996, the third time in 2005 for the Green Race (where I did 3 runs and a race run) half of the fun is NOT being truly ready. The run itself keeps me on my toes since I am reading and running for most of the time. Gorrilla is a rapid that I come into with little experience and yet charge it like it is class 2 because to eddy out, stop paddling, or hesitate, is to stop racing. That is a sweet feeling! It is excitement, fear, and courage at the same time.
Am I ready for the Green Race? I have never lost one before, but, I have only raced once.
By the way, I don't race a Dancer, Toranado, or other 1980's long boat. I did 20 years of extreme racing in those and enjoy my sub 9' creeky boats that are designed for this type of water. The peer pressure at the Green is different than any other race in the world. "Long boats rule" is the theory.
You know what? Want to race me you'll have to race in the "short boat class" as they call it. Otherwise known by the general paddler as a creekboat.
:) EJ P..s I am not ready p.p.s. I am ready p.p.p.s I hope I can race! |
