Not kidding around.  I hate it here, and would give just about anything to head home to the Southeast again.

The cost of living here is sky-high, Sac is currently rated as one of the top 3 riskiest real estate markets and top 3 overpriced real estate/ housing areas (by Forbes magazine: info online at http://www.forbes.com) in the entire US, our crime averages are above normal (Sac didn't fare so well on last year's annual safest and most dangerous cities compilations), we have ruthless criminals who murder babies-- no, not abortionists, but idiots who literally put guns to a 7-month-old's head then kill thm execution-style (look up the recent Aquitania murders on SacBee.com or any of the national outlets), gas is almost at $4 a gallon, the San Juan wave, Sac's former playspot and just about only saving grace, was even wiped out by a flood last year.
Trust me, Dan and I lived just around the corner from where it once stood.
And failing that, your local boating is the South Fork American (45 min or so away), which alot of folks tend to call a class 3 run, but in reality, I feel like they may've borrowed that rating from the many raft companies who operate on Chili Bar & the Gorge.  Those two runs are mostly class 2 moving water, with alot of paddling done in between to reach a couple of playspots and maybe three class 3 rapids?  Whatever the case, they're a disappointing offering for folks who've had the Ocoee, Plateau, and Smokies runs as our home rivers previously.

Folks and friendships seem different here, too.
It takes more time and more effort to build networks, and my personal experience has been that people just aren't nearly as warm or welcoming.
The boating community can be a bit difficult to crack, too, and tends toward the more.... exclusive, as well.

All this being said, Sac is a great location and launching point for exploring northern, coastal, and central California: San Francisco's an hour-and-a-half, Yosemite's about 2-3, Tahoe an hour-and-a-half, the north coast area about 5-7 hours out.  We have decent access to snowboarding and skiing, too.

But that really don't make much difference if the heart and pulse of those around you just doesn't beat the same.  Aside from my husband and little boy, it's been a hard year here for me: just doesn't feel like home, no matter how you cut it.

Just my two cents.
Let us know if you do decide to head this way.

And happy birthday a little early (I thought you were a Cancer/ July baby??)-- good luck with whatever your plans entail, sweetheart!
