But the online gauge never got as high as 1200 or so. So which was it? It certainly felt higher than 1000 did back in November. It handed me my first swim in a while , at yard sale no less. I went into the bottom hole upside down after missing an offside roll and it felt like it wasn't letting go. It was nothing to scary, I got to the bank with no trouble and my mega rocker floated high in the water with it's float bags. No lost gear though, yard sale didn't live up to it's name in that respect. I think one problem I had is I was pretty wore out at that point. It was definitely an eye opener and I realized that training off the water is probably as important as training on the water. Other than my swim and a couple extended hole rides my group didn't see any carnage, but I'm sure there was some. We heard about a guy who jacked up his shoulder pretty bad. And while we were looking for a ride from the takeout some guy came walking in wondering if anyone had seen his boat floating into the lake. I'm not sure where he ditched it though, and someone there had seen it and told him where he could find it.
The weather was about as perfect as it could be in NC in February, a little cold but warm for winter standards. Bear Creek was a blast, but a little bit crowded. Nice number of spectators (both scouting boaters and non-boaters). It was cool to have a Dagger green boat sighting, that thing is so long! It will be a strange day when those things start showing up on the river, definitely sticks out now (11 or 12 foot of solid green), but I think it would be funny if folks start barreling down the Ocoee in groups of 10 in them.
All in all it was a great day. The Cheoah offers nonstop action unlike anything I've been on in the SE. Thanks for reading and letting me get that swim off my chest.
