You must have never run a river that maybe you shouldn't have
You must have been a star on your high school sports team
You must have never have asked someone whether or not you were ready for a run.
You must have never swam when maybe you shouldn't have.
You must have never commented on the fact that you saw some river celebrity on the river you were on.
Right? Really who cares what all these other people are doing. Two weeks ago, a couple of friends of mine and I, all of whom have paddled more than 10 years, ran the Big South Fork from Burnt Mill to O&W on a clear sunny day with levels well over 2000 cfs. We didn't see another sole on the river or at the take or put in. I even swam at the el like an idiot. But no harm was done. It was amazing to me that it was possible to have that entire river to ourselves. The bottom line is, if you are out with some good buds, enjoying a great river, the rest be damned. Its still kayaking for the reasons you kayak. Take satisfaction in knowing that someone who is in it for the wrong reasons may not get the satisfaction from it you do.
I wasn't on a high school sports team and I've done every one of those things above at one time or another. And guess what, I ran Spring Creek a month ago and Dane Jackson and some guys from Jackson Kayaks were in the group I hooked up with. I thought it was pretty cool.
