I live in colorado now and participated in the vertical challenge last year. Boaters had fun doing what boaters do, it brought the community together, and the event raised a bunch of money for kids with cancer to kayak. It was a positive deal all around.
At one point in time, someone had the first rodeo / freestyle event. Now they are all over the country and world. They were a good idea and the idea took off and the entire boating community benefited.
There are down river races on the green, the little white, gore, etc. One must have started it all, and in the end its good fun and the kayaking community as a whole benefits from multiple events like this.
I see TVF / vertical challenge as no different. TVF is a great idea, and I had loads of fun watching it go down and cheered for the teams of the guys I knew. There was no TVF in colorado last year, and the eddyflower guys set up a similar event. The boating community out west had a good time, and in the end a good chunk of cash was raised for kids / young adults with cancer to kayak at Brad Ludden's first descents kayak camp. That is nothing but positive karma in my mind. I was happy that I could contribute to an event that made a positive impact on some sick kids lives and have fun while doing it.
So, my take is that if something is good for boaters, good for the boating community, benefits sick kids, and this year also has an AW membership component, how exactly is that bad karma, negative etc. From the outside looking in, I don't really understand all the animosity around something that is going to be a net positive for the boating community in general. We are all boaters aren't we?
