the trick is determining if your discomfort is if the gasket is uncomfortably tight to put on, or if it is too tight to wear.  
If your nose goes numb after 30 minutes then might be up for cutting down to a larger size.  
If it's just tough to get over your head then consider wetting the gasket to make it easier to get on.
If you need to modify it, by stretching or cutting, then the best advise regardless of your approach is to be careful.  Latex is pretty resilient, but just be deliberate with what you do and you'll be fine.
