Look, if what you say is true and the gasket is being stretched each time it's donned, and then for hours during use, then why the need to use the 3 liter?  I've not had as many dry tops as you or paddled nearly as long, but I work in a physical testing lab and I'm pretty familiar with the properties of laytex. The last top I bought was a NRS plunge, the neck gasket was not only way too tight, it was also too long. Trimming it back just made sense. I still have a tight seal and I'm betting it'll be fine for long haul.
