pro's of your local shop:
you can put your hands on the stuff before you buy.
get advice from the "experts"
supporting local economy
can get essentials on the way to a river. ie: skirt, rope, pfd, etc.

con's of your local shop:
REALLY expensive
limited stock, not all sizes, colors, models, etc available.
the buyers decide what they sell, and they are usually biased about what companies 's stuff they sell
hear the shop staff brag about how cool they are, because they are ballers, and run the shit.

pro's of mail order:
You can get stuff for cheaper.
better selection of everything, brands, colors, sizes, types.
no hype, just stuff for cheaper.
good customer service.
no shop guys trying to push their "coolness" on you.

con's of mail order:
you don't get to put your hands on the stuff before you buy it.
you have to wait for your order, sometimes colors are not what they look like in a catalog or mail order(who cares? it's just a color!)
returns or exchanges can take a while to take place.

This is what I can come up with immediately, but I am sure I've missed a few in all categories.

My vote is for the mail order.  who gives a rat's ass how cool you are, I want this brand, but you don't carry it because the other guys gave you free schwag, so you'd carry their stuff exclusively.  I'll shop locally if I ABSOLUTELY need something, but I'd rather save money in the long run.

what about you?  and reasons?  this is NO way intended to start any controversy, but to spark conversation regarding local vs mail order.
