Its worth it to me to pay a little extra so that the local shop (paddling, climbing, or bike shop) will still be in business for those occasions where I need something NOW. It's also nice to have a local retailer to deal with if a piece of gear doesn't meet my expectations.

If I need something they can't get, or come across a screaming deal that they can't match, then I'll mail order.
