saying the risk in skiing are not the same as kayaking is a complete and blatant lie.
i have been skiing since i was 3 years old. with my math that now equals 27 years of skiing. i spent a lot of time with my folks on the slopes in my younger years learning everything i could from them and there friends and anyone else that i could learn something from. by the time i hit high school my abilities had surpassed everyone i skied with. even small ski areas these days have terrain parks which can dish up some serious if not life threatening concequences, not to mention all the in bounds tree runs where many people not just kids get seriously injured. by my early teen years i was skiing with folks i'd meet at the mountain because i wanted and needed that group of that would allow me to continue progressing. my parents where very responsible in making sure that i knew what i was doing and was taking as many safety precautions as i could and excercising good judgement based on my abilities and the sourounding conditions.
and yes my parents did send my off on a school trip to jackson hole at the age of 16 to ski with who i wanted, where i wanted. it was one of the best trips of my life and learned that even though it may have looked "good to go" in the magazine i just wasn't ready when i got to certain lines and you know what my upringing told me it was ok to say i'm not ready for this particular line.
try telling ted devoe's, pat keller's, adrienne levchenck's, dane and emily jackson's, even the little canadian oc1 girls parents that they shouldn't let there kids progress as they are. that's absurd, unless you paddle with these kids and there suppport groups you have no clue what goes on and have no right to make blanket statements. i have paddled with many kids in many different situations some i have supported some i haven't but if you aren't there all the time you really don't know anything about the situation.
oh yeah i would take a highwater day on the toxaway or raven fork any day over driving through rush hour traffic anyday.
do you really think it's any safer for shawn white to be hucking 100' + gaps on his snowboard as a teenager then a teen kayaking the green with solid support?
