He would die if he saw me run Baby Falls, let alone freewheel it...geez, what about Gorilla!? He would not be happy if he saw that. I know some of my own personal restrictions have been caused by the views of my parents, their ignorance and disapproval of kayaking. But I was also allowed to climb WAY up in trees and use power tools and firearms at a young age. I climbed around on heavy equipment as a child and I had a dirtbike. I even drove way before I had a license. What does that tell you? People have different ideas about 'what is safe' and 'what isn't' based on their environment. Clay hit the nail on the head on that one. I think people see a kid doing something they are scared to do and they want to throw stones because it makes them feel a little insecure. And its easy to mask it by criticizing the parent. When I saw that Dane paddled Henderson I was surprised, but who am I to judge EJ? I thought it was cool that a father and son could do that together. I'm sure EJ is nervous watching Dane sometimes. I know a little about that. Try doing Bear with your spouse. Scary. With kids, you just have to be sure they are WAY beyond ready and be conservative. I saw Clay bitch out a kid on the Gauley for running a slot blind in Lost Paddle. Thats what you have to do. Then they learn to paddle the right way and hopefully you instill some fear into their immortal little asses. No taking a kid down a run they can barely survive and just blasting down it with no scouting like adults do all the time. Its old school conservative all the way on anything even semi-dangerous. I do think parents shouldn't go alone with their kid on any remote run.
