I disagree about this more than most. For me, I started paddling when I was 12 and I was running class 5 by the time I was 15. Did I get hurt? Nope.. Did I get killed, obviously not.

How many swims have I had since I started boating? TWO

The idea that you can/should shelter your kid is rediculous. Kids are kids and the best thing that you can do for them is teach them responsibility. Teach them that actions have consequences and if you decided to introduce them into a "dangerous" sport, then teach them the dangers and show them that these are life-threatening dangers.

I know a ton of "sheltered" kids that were killed in car accidents between their 15th and 17th birthday. Did their parents teach them how to weave in and out of traffic? Hell no!

I got my first dirt bike at 4 years old. I was racing dirt bikes by 6 years old. I just recently turned 26 years old and I've never had any life threatening injuries and I believe that I am one of the most conservative class 5 boaters that I know.  I've paddled all the class 5/6 creeks  that are worth mentioning and I've done so with care, caution, and respect

Teach your kids to do the same and quit being so blind.
