I flipped on a big slide I had run several times and was knocked out. I can't remember flipping. I remember entering the rapid and seeing the wave/hole at the top that I usually punch. I don't remember anything until I was at the bottom being pulled up on the rocks. Everything was black and while I was sitting there then a tunnel opened up and I could see again. I knew I was a kayaker and was on a river and I'd just been hammered, but I wan't sure exactly sure who I was and who the people around me were. It started coming to me in about five minutes they said. I kept getting confused and feeling wierd. I felt sleepy and sick to my stomach. I fought it off, stayed awake and ate anyway. I didn't go to the hospital, but that night, I got woken up every hour and I've been OK since. Looking at my old helmet, I took a couple big hits, one of which was at the base of my head above my neck, where the vision center of the brain is I think. I never wore that helmet again. I get ocular migraines ever since that incident. Its like a "C" with crystals in it that changes size and moves in my vision. I get 2-5 every year. The incident slowed me way down, and made me more cautious than I already was. But I do paddle that rapid again now, and some bigger ones too. |
