The club I joined as a newbie definitely suffered from the same problems as any kind of club, anywhere: tons of people just wanting to be "in charge" of something so they can tell other people what they should and shouldn't paddle (boats as well as rivers), lots of gossiping, backstabbing, etc. I QUICKLY got tired of that crap and just started hooking up with likely looking groups at Class II put-ins, and that's how I learned to paddle. Thank you very much to all the cool people who were willing to risk cleaning up after a newb, and for giving pointers. :-) I've heard the same thing happens in a lot of other clubs, and met a lot of other boaters who don't join because of that.
Since then, I've met people who were very active in a club and they were totally awesome. Had I been living near that club and joined it instead, I'd probably still be a member 9 years later.
So it's all individual to the club. I've seen both good and bad.
