I'm much more interested in car pooling now, even for the shorter trips.  Splitting the cost of gas helps quite a bit.  I've even started to do thinks like running shuttle (literally) instead of taking two cars.  I look forward to doing this on the Nolichucky Gorge again this summer!  I used to not care so much about driving, shuttling, and gas cost, but I think about it quite a bit when making a trip now.  I also think about the quality of the trip.  ELF runs have lost a lot of their appeal.  It's also made me think of relocating.  I'd love to have a river 30 minutes from my house!
