that I have found to be somewhat more predictive at times, usually use it along with NOAA and Weather channel for supporting data.

Also check out the Metropolitan Meteograms for longer range precip forecasts:

so for the appalachians, extrapolate between Nashville, Atl and Charlotte. This method is rather sketchy but can help prioritizing which weekends to paddle.
