Maybe:

He/she:  was hurt .. simple knee, neck,  or back tweak could prevent hiking back in and carrying out.
had to work and isn't local... not everyone lives near the river and works flexible jobs
hiked in but couldn't get to it by himself, didn't know anyone who could go that day..

Lots of reasons there could be a boat left in a river for a couple weeks.

Consider getting it out to the river-bank or tying it off? Consider a good deed.   It's 'common courtesty'  as well as good practice and beats having it wash into nutcracker and then seeing pieces end up downstream.   You might get a 'finders fee' for paddling it out.  You might generate good karma.  It might just be your boat left in Cali or WA or New Zealand someday...

Don't let the sheer number of witnesses keep you all from lifting a finger.
