My first was a 1988 Wagon L and I put about 100,000 miles on it. Replaced one air compressor. Bought with 85,000 on it for $2000, sold with 190,000 miles on it for $1750.
Second was a 1997 Legacy Wagon. Bought with 90,000 miles on it for $5000, had a bit of tranny work at 130,000 miles ($900), then nothing else until I sold it with 240,000 miles for $3200.
Third was a 2000 Outback Limited. Bought with 125,000 miles for $7000, drove it for a long time and sold it with 240,000 miles on it for $6000. Did a little clutch work at about 200,000 ($350).
I currently have another 2000 Outback Limited and I bought it with 106,000 and it currently has probably 110,000 or so. I paid $7000. Nothing has happened.
I can carry 5 kayaks w/ stackers and there is room for 3 people for a weekend of paddling and camping. When I have 4 people or more, I drive our Suburban.
Great cars.
The Matrix is also a great car, but not having 4wd with a stick is a problem in a little car.
It is also smaller than the Outback.
