i had a great experience buying used at carmax.

on the passat and on buying used, a real issue is buildup of gunk/sludge in the oil case, which is a result of folks leasing a car and not caring enough to change the oil out regularly. it can ruin the engine and to have it fixed can be a couple thousand dollars if not covered under warranty. i've owned several VW's and never had this problem till i bought a passat and was shocked when i took it in and they were telling me that my vehicle with 30k miles needed such an overhaul. fortunately it was covered under warranty.

i think buying most cars used is ok, but i'll probably be more careful when buying something that is fuel injected and requires attention like a passat again.

subaru's are pretty tough, my wife has the forester and its a great car.

good luck

th_up Be careful with VWs.  Mine needed a new engine at 100K miles and they told me that was normal. Turtle81 New
note I have the Jetta TDI & you have to replace the timing belt at 100K. If if breaks you will need a new engine. Ed_E.Hopper New
th_up TDI engines are okay, anything but that, look out.  Regardless, I am sticking with Honda. <NT> Turtle81 New
