So I pop rivoted a bar on my FNA years ago after taking a paddle to the teeth in a head to head race, though I would take it back off for actual creeking... ended up leaving it on because there's just no drawback and it's the only thing keeping the cockpit / paddle from breaking your nose!
How many times have you hit your jaw on a rock?
How many times have you hit your face on the paddle or cockpit rim?
It's the paddle and cockpit rim injuries I see over and over on big-drop landings and having that bar in place lets you commit to a tuck even when coming down flat. And if you do 'burning man' over, your natural inclination to hold the paddle out in front of your face on landing won't end up costing you a nose job or dentures - or even just the tell-tale blood of stupidity.
I've smacked my face into the paddle shaft or cockpit rim off waterfalls like Spirit and Rock Island countless times -but also below big slides like Oceana / Wintergreen and bouncy drops like Fishbowl, 3rd drop of Stairway, or bottom of Mike Tyson's where you think you boofed but your stern sends you on your head last minute. And there's always those narrow drops like Adrenaline, Anaconda, Go Left.
It's a drag for the photos, but if your bar isn't too shiney (black spraypaint) you won't really notice it.
