I use pinnacle studio, I just upgraded to studio ultimate v.11.  It is easy to use once you learn the software and that is not hard.  The problem with software is that it can get really expensive fast.( to fully unlock one add-on program in studio ultimate is an additional $240 bucks).  the average file size for high 8 to dvd is 4-5 gigs, DV to dvd is alot more,  this is where a large hard drive comes in to play.  Editing video also uses a lot of a computer's resources, so you need to have as little as possible running in the background.
hope this helps, This info was for a PC.  I think that most would agree that Mac's are better suited and are better at video editing.
