Bet you Rescue 3 and others are chomping at the bit...
I seriously doubt kayakers are 'a huge drain' for our numbers. BUT:
DO NOT CALL A RESCUE SQUAD unless you are dying or so injured you have to be evacuated. If your friends are out after dark - they'll be fine or if they aren't it's too late anyway. If they are 2 days overdue? They will either all come out or a few will come out with details.
Drowning happens fast, unpinning a boat or scouting or swapping out equipment down the river takes time.
How many instances have rescue squads actually helped someone get out of the woods? A chopper for a major injury - sure - but seems most of the time the rescue squad are called the paddlers hike / paddle out the next day and the rescue squad stayed up all night for nothing. Bet that torques em out.
If you are a paddler you must tell your wife / husband / girlfriend / roommates that you will probably stay out overnight occasionally in your pursuits and it is nothing to worry about. Happens all the time. Just part of the sport.
Plan for the occasional unintentional overnight when you pack your drybag but more importantly just let your friends know that it happens to people frequently and they are almost always embarrassed but fine and reach the take-out under their own steam the next day.
