I'll let him post up more detailed info on access, but:
You can put in anywhere around Squirrel Spur Rd where the river is near the road, or butter up to a landowner like our group did. If the little ditch looks like its navigable, there will be enough water. I believe the watershed got just over an inch of rain in about 12 hrs--thats the other cool thing about this run is that it doesn't take much rain, and has a pretty good sized watershed just off the VA parkway.
The run itself is about 3 miles. It has mostly class III boogie with a bunch of little slides and ledges. Very comparable to in between stuff on WFFB, or upper Rocky Broad. There are 3 larger slides, the 2nd slide, that we called "balls to the wall" is the hardest, which is like the Blind Date move on NFFB... The third drop is good to go also; start center driving left.
The end of the run spits you out on the reservoir where Round Meadow, and Sawteeth Gorge converge above the Pinnacles of the Dam. Again I'll let Eric touch on this if he wants to, but you have to get a "day use permit" from the dam operators by either calling, or faxing them the form, and then they will return fax the combination to the gate locking the reservoir access road.
We found this to be a very unique run, dropping off the Blue Ridge Escarpment into the Mt Airy/Hanging rock area of the northern piedmont. The dam operaters welcomed us on the property very warmly...but keep in mind Eric made sure they knew our plans, and intentions. Any groups wanting to explore this cool litte gorge should spare no expense to do the same. |
