Firstly, im usually the driver on trips. Honestly i never cared too much about gas money and whether someone contributed or not. I never ask, but most people just volunteer. With gas approaching $4/gal its getting to a point where i would have to ask for money if someone doesnt offer. The question is, whats fair. I figured it this way...
Lets say Round trip is 210 miles. Gas is $3.65 gal. 2 people in the car other than the driver. My car avgs 24 mpg with boats on top. I guess i could start the avg mpg monitor when we left the parking lot for an accurate measurement, but that seems like its overly anal/assholish.
So, 210/24=8.75 gallons x 3.65 = 31.9$ of gas used / 3 people = roughly $10 per passenger.
Should the 2 people riding go ahead an pony up $15 each? After all there is mileage wear and tear etc... personally i would.
So, at current prices, this works out to a formula of $.071 per mile that a rider should pay. Assuming 1 driver two passengers.
Wow, am i bored or what?
