...this is probably motivated by expense. My guess is that rescue depts local to where the rivers are, have to go pull drunk johnboaters out of the river. No helmets, crappy Walmart PFDs, the boaters thought that "shooting the rapids" would be fun and exciting, not realizing how difficult that type of water is to navigate, or the level of danger they're putting themselves in. So yeah, for that person, some education and training would be a good idea.
Too bad most of the "experts" don't have any swiftwater training themselves, and their "education" is likely to be STAY OFF THE RIVER. I fail to understand why emergency crews that are located near moving water will not get themselves training in swiftwater rescue, if they're having to do this type of thing year after year. |
