unspoken expectations only lead to hard feelings and loss of friendship. It's super easy to say "dude, kinda low on cash, let's split the gas" on any trip.
With close friends and regular paddling partners I have found that a natural give and take happens over the course of time. Then again, there are some people who always seem to want to cheap out. But, they don't get invited into the car very often once that is discovered.
Just be sure to talk with people and iron things out BEFORE the trip so it is not an issue that interrups your paddling fun.
