I had surgery about 3 years ago for a labral tear + supraspinatus tendon tear. I had my arm in a sling for 3 weeks and was instructed to let the arm hang and move it a little. I could write after a week or so (it was kind of awkward, but workable) and could get the coffee cup to my mouth after 3 weeks. After that I did PT 2 or 3 times per week for 10 weeks. The first few weeks was working on range of motion and strength after that. I was back in a boat on easy whitewater 3.5 months after surgery and was doing pull-ups 6 months after surgery. I was given the option of not having surgery, but it wasn't going to get any better. When I told the orthopedist that I kayak, climb, mountain bike, snowboard, etc., his response was that his assistant would schedule the surgery.
It was definitely worth having the surgery. I think if I hadn't, I would have eventually done far worse damage to the shoulder and it would have been that much more difficult to repair.
Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. I recommend that you talk to one or more of them and discuss your options. I had 2 colleagues who were told by their HMO that there was nothing that could be done with injuries very similar to mine. If the advice sounds questionable get a second opinion.
I noticed from your BT profile that you're in northern MD. I can recommend a couple good surgeons in the DC area (Ben Schaffer and Thomas Fleeter both do excellent shoulder work). If you post your question on the Monocacy Canoe Club (monocacycanoe.org) site, some of the Baltimore area boaters may be able to suggest someone. I have no clue at the Philly area.
Good luck. |
