question Helmet lifespan? New

Do helments have a lifespan?  Is there a general rule that a helment, provided it is still in good condition, should be retired?  I was told by a helmet dealer that about five years a helmet should be retired.  As you know, all things of the earth begin to break down and a helmet is no different.

I have a five year Greatful Head helmet with no visible damage other than a few small dings and scrapes.  Is it tiem to spend another $150 or is mine still good?

Thanks
