Northern Watersnakes, when they are young, are often mistaken for Copperheads. When N. Watersnakes get older they get darker and are often mistaken for Cottonmouths. However, it is quite possible that he did see a Copperhead in the water. Copperheads are the least dangerous of all N.American Pit Vipers. Yet their poison (Hemotoxin) is about the same as a rattler or cottonmouth.  It attacks red blood cells whiuch carry oxygen to your testicles.
