I'm not doubting your snake-identifying skills, I'm just putting this out there so people don't feel compelled to kill a relatively harmless snake.  Here's a copperhead:



Here is a banded water snake:



The most obvious difference between the two is the shape of the head.   Copperheads, like other pit vipers, have a triangular shaped head.  Banded water snakes don't.  Look before you kill.
