I'm not sure how you made the shape from the contour tool without moving the pins, but it sounds like a great way to get a good fit. I always thought they would stay better if I could get the blocks to bond to the boat.
Like I said in the description, though, I rely on the thin layer of minicell covering the blocks to hold them in. I almost never get the blocks themselves to fit flat enough to bond to the hull. The upshot is that I have to re-glue my knee blocks in about every 30 boating days, but I'm lazy and just spray glue them at the put-in, so it's not that much trouble. As a bonus, when I sell my boat I can pull my knee blocks out and stick them in my next boat without having to start all over again.
Your way definitely sounds better, but due to my inherent laziness.....
