My theory is that things silt up in dry times in that sieve in the middle and change the direction of the flow.
When the last drought happened, there was a period of time where suddenly people were getting stuffed under that rock. Back then, most people quit running the main line at boof when levels were below what is now about 8.5"-9". The landing is hard anyway at those levels, and the sneak is a better, more challenging, cleaner, MORE FUN move too. Basically nobody was running the main line for a year or two back around the turn of the century during that last drought.
