1.  It cant be planned far in advance unless the only things that you want to do are dam release.

2.  The majority of us have to travel pretty significant distances to get our fix.  We dont just drive 15 minutes to the course, play 18 and make it home for dinner.

The obvious being said, significant others are also bidding for our time.  I mean, we have work 40 hours a week that keeps us apart.  Its likely that when running errands in the evenings, you go one way and she goes another so that you can get it all done. If you have kids, it's even more difficult to find "together time" with sports, friends, school events, etc.  So with all of the things that go on in life, that SO is trying to get some of your time amongst everything else thats going on from day to day and now you want to run off to the river for a couple of days....WTF?  The thing that cant be understood by a non-paddler is the whole of the experience.  They have likely never been in that remote gorge and seen things that only paddlers can see from the river.  It provides us with everything from clarity of mind to time to ponder where we really came from.  Maybe they have been in a raft or something, but look back at yor first trips and ask yourself how much of your time was focused on looking around and enjoying what our creator has given us.  Then you have the whole experience of the focus that comes with the task at hand and the comraderie that goes with the group experience and the trust that you put in your friends hands.  I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that I dont feel like non-paddlers are capable of truly understanding what we see in what we do.  They may understand its importance to you and they may bend a bit to allow you to do it, but they cant truly understand it, and that in itself is frustrating to them.

Then we could talk about sex and the differences through the eyes of a male vs the eyes of a female.  Yes, it has its own set of impacts...we see things differently.

The bottom line though has already been said.  You have to be happy in yourself before you can make your SO happy.  Thats what paddling does for us...we're a bit of an odd lot, but we're still human.
