I live in Raleigh, where the rivers are mostly flat, and anything decent is about a four hour drive. The Haw River is pretty much the only whitewater out here. I used to wait for the rain, never getting my kayak out unless the online gage got over ~5000 cfs.
So I was getting bummed out by the lack of water recently, when I realized that my local river doesn't have to be pounding near flood stage to make paddling it worthwhile. So I went on a low water run, and came out just as happy as I would have been if the river had been up. Isn't that great? A class II drift is still enjoyable.
So all you boaters who eagerly wait for rain, get off your lazy asses and load up your gear! Even if the rivers are down, there's paddling to be done.
