I had a 1997 Outback: bought with 97k, sold with 180k
Leaking Rear seals...twice
Head Gaskets....twice
When the two occured at once the last time, I decided to replace the entire engine with a rebuilt one.
That lead to a mysterious overheating problem that my mechanic still swears is another head gasket though it always tested fine. I replaced the radiator and themostat, still overheated.
Then, for some reason, I bought a 2000 Outback with 14k, sold with 120k
Head Gaskets...twice
Fuel Pump
Transmission out at 84k
Strange rattling noise that no one could find
Tons of air noise around the windows
Leaking rear seals
I loved the cars, just hated all the problems, which led to me hating the cars.
I finally sold the 2000 for $6700 with 120k miles on it, and bought a 1994 Nissan 4x4 with 175k miles for $4000, and have had zero problems since. Best car trade I ever made.
I never had the replacing all 4 tires at once problem, I needed 4 tires everytime I had to put tires on. I did hear that uneven tire wear could lead to problems with the AWD, and it makes sense that it would.
Subaru's problems are well documented online, however, I have heard that the newer ones had far less issues.
