Imagine: you and a buddy ride to the river together, and meet two others who rode together.  On the morning shuttle one of you may need to carry all four boats and all four folks.  On the evening shuttle the other may need to do the same thing.  Now imagine yer on a road trip to the Adirondacks and Jim Michaud is gonna show you the ropes on the Bottom Moose.  Oops, Michaud paddles an open boat.  Now imagine I am riding with Jim.  Oops, suddenly there is the possibility that you will have to carry two open boats and two kayaks (or more, since kayakers never seem to be able to road-trip without at least two boats each).

It is important, as a courtesy to yer fellow boaters, to be able to carry twice as many boats and people on shuttle as you carried to the river in the first place.

When I ordered my van I ordered it with the biggest trailer-mirrors Ford offered, so I could put 8' (96") 2x4 racks on it (had to cut 'em down to 94").  'Course, no-one is tall enough to bump a head on my racks.  But when my river car was a Honda Accord I had the longest racks I could, despite the occasional head-bump.

There is no such thing as too much rack space.

Solve the problem by padding the bars, or hanging brightly-colored ribbons from them, or both, but don't cut 'em down!
