Last week I had a chance to paddle the first production Green Boat at the Green. The first thing I noticed was how heavy the boat is - noticeably heavier than the Tornado. Not bad once in the water, though. The boat is built to be paddled and to last. Good on Dagger.
Now for how it paddles.
Wow. I've never paddled anything like it! This is truly a unique kayak. Narrow width, high volume, and plenty of height give little initial stability but plenty of secondary. Lean the boat over to engage the rails and the thing takes off! The massive amount of combined bow and stern rocker caused the boat to plane up in flats and shallow water but I learned quickly that this can be overcome by engaging the rails to carve back and forth slightly.
From Bride down to Go Left I didn't notice much difference from the Tornado. Those who are familiar with the Green know that this is where the gradient picks up, though. And this is where the Green Boat started to shine. The late boof into the Zwick's hole was easy as cake thanks to the amount of rocker the boat has. The rocker allowed me to run the slides below Gorilla faster than ever before and I actually ran them without getting my face wet - the boat screamed down the slides and skimmed beautifully into the pools below without losing speed. Sunshine Left went easily and the boat was extremely fun on the run out to Fishtop.
In summary, I think that the Green Boat has some incredible features. It will take time to learn to learn the boat well enough to make the most of the benefits it provides over the Tornado but on the other hand, this boat is available for all who want one. Hats off to Dagger for making this boat available for all. Paddle one if you get a chance. I may end up with a Green Boat but for now I'll stick to the lighter, easier-turning Tornado that I have access to.
Good lines out there
