If you drop your gear off at White Haven, and drive to Rockport, there should be no problem hitching a ride back. If you put your gear down near the putin, it should be safe enough. Alternatively, I've run a bike up the 9 mile bike path along the river and gotten twice the exercise. The road shuttle on the lower half (Rockport to Glen Onoko) is a lot longer (but is about 12 miles along the bike path). Some maps at http://www.balajthy.com/lehigh.html.
