My good level s for Z-dam are from 5.1 to 5.9. on this gauge http://waterdata.usgs.gov/va/nwis/uv/?site_no=02037500&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060 Right now it’s perfect. The lower the stickier, higher flushy. I play there almost when ever it's in but will be gone this weekend. There should be folks around, if it's in. Most people that come there for the first time are pretty intimidated, but it's really not too bad. If you stay in the notch, which is easy to do, and are comfortable getting window shaded until you dial it in you should be fine.

Pipeline is kinda good now but gets better at lower water, under 5 footish. Here is a link to the Coastals page with directions and maps.
http://www.coastals.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1151 look at the second post for the James.

For Z-Dam, park at Pony Pasture and walk out of the lot, make a right and walk about a half a mile or so. If you have people with you I would drop them, boats, and gear off and walk up empty handed. You can then paddle down when you’re done and get out at the STEPS on river RIGHT.

For Pipeline park at the North Sore lot, walk back out to the street, cross the "busy" road and keep walking with the big wall on your right. You should see an entrance to the "pipe" and can walk up it, there is a catwalk on it. When done paddle down, stay left and get out at the STAIRS on river LEFT.

Have fun!!
