news Plea from the Futa - stop the rumors New

I got an email from my former partner at kayakfu... Nivia and Luis Toro Mundaca....

For those who are posting up doom and gloom, PLEASE STOP.  Quite simply, in reference to the Futaleufu River tourism sector, you are hurting their industry to the point that the articles and posts floating around are in itself a natural disaster!  There is NOT a foot of ash on the valley floor, but just a little!  The river is NOT in danger!  If it isn't already clean via one of the Fu's woopass rainfalls, the river valley should already be rid of most ash.  It will clearly be ready next season for a classic Futa experience.

Nivia and Luis of my old haunting grounds sends me this plea:

loosly translated:  Stop rumor mongering, and stop the articles circulating in our paddlesports/adventure mags... you are killing us!  Articles going into our major paddling mags and into our boater forums are driven by those aiming at making this look worse than it is... I hate to point out why, but it doesn't make for nice results.  Where there are those who are greatly affected by the Chaiten volcano, the Futaleufu valley tourism operators are not among them and they wish that the stories and guesswork stops.  Please continue to donate to aid the farmers and inhabitants around Chaiten, the Town of Futaleufu and others in the region affected... there is definite need.  But the valley operations are fine.  The regions tourism is now key to helping those around them that ARE affected... if that industry tanks due to speculative posts and exaggerated stories of the river's impending doom, all revenue to the valley will be lost and there will be no choice for locals but to sell their land to dam builders and refineries!!!!!!!

There have been widespread cancellations of trips at devistating levels and these exaggerated stories are simply not true.  The river, as Nivia points out, is just as beautiful as it ever was.

Again, just a little ash has fallen in the valley and along the Futaleufu River.  STOP the spreading of disaster rumors PLEASE.  Any press listening, please be sure to take off or correct articles published re. disaster.  This kind of thing is a far greater risk to the region than the volcano.  Agriculture etc. is in need for sure.

I no longer have an operation in Chile, but my heart rests with Luis, Nivia, Spe, Tyler/Mariann and all the others who have worked sooo hard to make this a paradise for all of you... please support them and their Chilean partners to ensure that rumors don't kill a lively hood!

thanks and cheers
