My beloved 5.10 Nemos finally died, after almost 9 years. I went to all three boating shops in town, and the shoe that seemed the best was the Keen Hood River. We do a TON of hiking, so a substantial sole is a must. I realized that with the thicker sole of the HR, I would be trading some stickiness. However, I didn't realize they would literally feel like a greased pig anytime they got near a rock that was even slightly damp.
Seriously, these things are heinously slippery. TOTALLY unworkable as a river shoe.
Here are some ideas for what I can get from the awesome shop that took them back, Pipestone Mountaineering in Missoula (and no, I would not have "outed" them if they didn't give me store credit). I want something reasonable to hike in that still has some 'stick'.
5.10 canyoneer 2, seem really bulky and clunky, but it's hard to tell from the catalog.
la sportiva exum river, seem pretty cool. anyone used these? How stiff/sticky are the soles (again, looking in a catalog).
keen payette, scared of keens now, though these are totally different rubber. I wish they were slightly lower cut...but might be the cheapest option, even if I added an insole to make the sole a little bit thicker?
nrs attack, way too thin of a sole for what I want. NRS makes some BURLY looking shoes, but I want to be realistic and find a compromise...but then, these things don't have to fit in a playboat, only in a creekboat.
nike tokatee, still made? not available at this store, but I am open to other ideas, too. |
