I have to agree with you about the Keen Hood River booties. They're comfy for walking around on flat dry ground. Throw in some slopes or wet rocks and you've got a recipe for disaster. While my pair has become slightly more grippy as I have worn them more, I can't recommend these booties to anyone who expects to be portaging or scouting through even modestly technical terrain. The lack of ankle support and secure attachments to the foot (i.e. laces) make these things a poor choice for hiking/portaging, especially when moving downhill.
Keen has recently come out with the Payette bootie, however. These bear some resemblence to those discountinued Nike booties that people seemed to like. The Payette booties have noticeably better grip and ankle support as well. So, just to review: Hood River = bad, Payette = good.
