I own a forester (sportier and more fun to drive), the wife ownes an outback (better gear hauling and the autostick standard is way cool).  Both have been great cars as we pile the miles on and take them out of state just about every other weekend.  If I had to sell one it would be mine - her outback is more useful.

the 2.5 does fine - we've had four boats on the rook with two bikes on the back, 300+ lbs of gear inside and it went like a dream.  never felt like it was underpowered (being realistic with the car size and gear being hauled.

The accelerator will lag a bit due to the drive by wire but its predictable so no worries.  No mechanical failures yet in either car (60k+ on my 2006, 50k on her 2006).
