Just because they don't work to full capacity does not mean there is no difference between coated nylon and a breathable fabric.  From my own personal experience and the experience of virtually everyone I've ever spoken to, the performance of waterproof/breathable drytops and drysuits is vastly superior to that of coated nylon.  They also tend to last much longer.  Not to mention the fact that the massive portaging I did on Sunday would have likely killed me had I been in a nonbreathable drytop, whereas in my IR Double D, I was quite comfortable.  Hardly a waste of money.
