Having used several types of both kinds of drytops, I'm honestly baffled that you don't think there is a substantial difference in performance.  The cold clamminess that is standard in coated nylon simply isn't there with a goretex top and a proper skirt.  This makes a HUGE difference in cold weather comfort.
