There's something to be said for preparedness.  My first run on the Nantahala was a unique experience but in no way prepared me for Cheoah.  I needed to run the Upper Ocoee and Tellico first.  My mindset is safety first, fun second.  I'm much safer on the water (for myself and my crew) when I feel prepared.  Make sense?  Besides, even if I ran all of the rivers that everyone's suggesting merely as stepping stones for the Narrows, I'm sure that I would have an awesome experience.  We all paddle for different reasons and we all get different things out of our experiences.
