Emphasis on the last one.  West is a totally different story.  I mean, what is the worst that can happen if you go to the green and reallize it is not for you?  Well if you are not very smart, you could get hurt.  If you have a brain, you just portage all you don't see as doable, and if that means portaging everything, you hike out, now wiser to the reallity that is the green.  I mean, do people think that once you put on the river you are committed and have to run all the rapids and do like the Romans do?

As far as the SE goes, common sense, sense of mortallity, positive attitude, preparedness, and physical/cardio fitness are really all you need.  1-6 seems descriptive enough to me, unless you want to be spoonfed everything in life.
