women *usually* have more fear on the river than men at their same skill level. I don't know why. A friend of mine who posts to this board says that women seem to have a much better sense of self preservation than men, and while that's funny, it's also true, at least in my experience. Even women with Class V skills seem more cautious than men. Of course this is a total generalization and I've known careful men boaters (no kids) and fearless women boaters (no kids).
Also, most of the men paddlers I know that have kids are also more hesitant about what they paddle; that seems to be true regardless of gender. If you or I die on the river, it'd be sad for all our family and friends and I'm sure they'd throw us a nice funeral, but at least we're not leaving behind other human beings who are completely dependent on us for their physical, mental, and emotional well being for a number of years. So it makes sense for parents to think that way and be extra-extra-cautious. |
